Area murder research workers haven't been as busy this year.

In 2006 and 2007, there had been at least three murders in the country by March. But 2008 have seen only one murder -- Antony Castro, 46, of Davenport -- who was fatally stabbed earlier this calendar month in his apartment.

"I'm glad things have got slowed down in that peculiar area," said Maj. Microphone Brown of the George C. Scott County Sheriff's Office, though he could not state why murders were down.

Overall, counting murder-suicides and foolhardy murder complaints filed in fatal vehicle accidents, there were 11 murders in 2007 and 16 in 2006, according to tribunal records and The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus archives.

At last report, six of those lawsuits remained open. In some cases, there are no suspects. In others, police force have got suspects but can't collar them, said the Davenport Police Department's Lt. Gene Wall.

"We cognize who did it," he said. "We just don't have got the grounds to turn out it."

The longer a lawsuit stays open, the harder it is to solve, police force said.

Having an unsolved murder can be frustrating for investigators, the major said.

"If you have got one murder unfastened still, it weighs heavily on your mind," Maj. Brown said.
